Explanation
Inflation rate
Inflation is not a fixed term, it is commonly used to describe a sustained rise in price levels over several periods. Inflation can be measured, inter alia, by the Consumer Price Index for Germany (CPI). The CPI is calculated and published monthly by the Federal Statistical Office.
The percentage change in the CPI compared to the same period of the previous year is often referred to as the inflation rate. It is a measure of how the prices for private consumption expenditure in Germany change on average within a year. The terms „price increase“ and „rate of price increase“ are used synonymously.
Consumer price index
The consumer price index for Germany (CPI) measures the average price change of all goods and services purchased by households for consumption purposes. To compute the CPI, the average price development for each type of goods is weighted by a share of expenditure in relation to the base year. This proportion is derived from the average expenditure of all households in Germany on this type of goods. The weighting pattern provides an overview of all types of goods, including their share of expenditure in per thousand.
Personal inflation rate
How much an individual household is affected by inflation always depends on how much money it spends on which goods. For example, if you don’t have a car, you won’t spend money on fuels and vehicle maintenance – but these are part of the consumer price index basket. The personal inflation calculator offers the possibility to adjust individual goods sectors according to one's own consumption behavior and to calculate a personal inflation rate.
